U.S. Senate Candidate Kweisi Mfume Endorses Jamie Raskin for MD State Senate
Calls Raskin "A Breath of Fresh Air" and Praises His "Visionary Leadership"

Former U.S. Representative Kweisi Mfume, candidate for United States Senate, today endorsed Maryland State Senate candidate Jamie Raskin for the Democratic nomination in District 20 (Silver Spring and Takoma Park).
"In today’s political climate Jamie Raskin is a breath of fresh air,” Mfume said. “On the issues of public education, the environment, transportation, and civil rights, Jamie brings creative and visionary leadership not controlled by special interest money and out of touch political bosses. I applaud his efforts to reach out to all communities and I look forward to his distinguished service in the Maryland Senate."
Mfume served in the U.S. House of Representatives for ten years. While in his third term, the Speaker of the House chose him to serve on the Ethics Committee and the Joint Economic Committee of the House and Senate, where he later became Chairman. As a member of the House of Representatives, Congressman Mfume consistently advocated landmark business and civil rights legislation. He successfully co-sponsored and helped to pass the Americans with Disabilities Act and strengthened the Equal Credit Opportunity. He has served as Chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus. In 1996, he became President of the NAACP and served there for nine years.
"I'm very proud to have the endorsement of Congressman Mfume, who is an inspiring leader and a man of real passion and substance,” Raskin said. “And getting to know him on the campaign trail, which can be a lonely place, I have come to admire his strength of purpose, sense of humor and steadfastness." Raskin, who is running against incumbent Ida Ruben in the September 12 Democratic primary, has already been endorsed by Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr., Mrs. Thurgood Marshall, 21st Century Democrats, Progressive Democrats of America and the Montgomery Blair High School Silver Chips newspaper.
