D.C., Maryland and Virginia Politics
By Mark Plotkin

"Jamie Raskin is an extraordinarily smart guy. Ida Rubin's been in for a long time, but Raskin can't be underestimated." -Mark Plotkin
Mark Plotkin: The State of the Union message is on Tuesday and the mayor of D.C. will, or will not, be in the First Lady's box attending. I'm trying to find out if he's going to do this again. I wondered what you think. For the last several years, he's been a "potted plant," and not asked anything in return. This to me is a hallmark of this administration. In Maryland, there are some interesting primary challengers to incumbents. I'd like to get your thoughts on this. I did a commentary on WTOP this morning and talked in particular about the Franchot-Shaffer race for controller, and the challenge from Jamie Raskin, against Ida Ruben for the state senate in district 20. In Virginia, there's a special election for a state senate seat in Loudon County. Any thoughts about that?
Silver Spring, Md.: What do you think of the crowd in the Maryland Senate primary (Dems)? How delusional is it for non-sitting folks to imagine that they can win something as big as a Senate seat unless their name is Schwarzenegger or something?
Mark Plotkin: I did a commentary today on WTOP that said look, all incumbents' dirty little secret is that they can be beat. Peter Franchot running against William Donald Shaffer for comptroller-that's an uphill battle, no doubt about it. But Jamie Raskin is an extraordinarily smart guy. Really brilliant. Former editor of the Harvard Law Review. Funny, witty and dedicated and disciplined. Ida Rubin's been in for a long time, but Raskin can't be underestimated. If anything, I think most incumbents make the mistake of underestimating their opponents, thinking they've been in so long that nobody would vote against them and that they've got permanent tenure. And what happens occasionally is that voters decide they've had enough and with an attractive and viable alternative, throw the bums out. And that's what Raskin is hoping for.
